Gunnerside is an old lead-mining and farming village in the heart of upper Swaledale - a beautiful and unspoilt valley in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The road from Richmond in the east passes through several small villages which nestle against rugged scenery of moors and high pastures. The valley floor is crisscrossed with dry stone walls enclosing small hay fields. Nearly every field has its own haymew/cowstalls.

The King's Head provides meals at lunchtime and in the evening, there is also a small welcoming resturaunt and tea room. Phone calls can be made from the traditional red telephone box situated next to the pub. The village has its own Methodist Chapel; C of E churches are in Muker and Low Row, R.C. services are held in Reeth. Further details of local amenities and attractions will be available in the cottage.

There are many interesting walks which afford spectacular views of the dale and help to give a feeling of closeness with nature.
